News about Books, Videos and Social Media.

My paperback book Vino Voices – Wine, Work, Life is still on sale (despite my not having marketed it) and includes interviews with winemakers from over a dozen countries about why they love their work.

After a multi-year pause due to various reasons, in the coming months I will self publish my book The WInemakers’ Cooking Companion, which includes over 100 recipes from winemakers, winery chefs and winery owners located in 18 different countries. The video on that link was made years ago, but still applies.

During recent meetings with Marcel van Balen, a local restaurant owner and sommelier, we have put together three short 20 minute videos in the Wine Cowboys / No BS series. These are on YouTube and include:

Overview.

I recently visited Château de Beaucastel in Châteauneuf-du-Pape along the Rhone Valley of France to see their renovated winery buildings. The architectural engineering is grounded, ecologically integrated, energy efficient, and inspiring.

The article about this renovation will be out in Forbes in the next ten days.

Clockwise from top left: rammed earth (pisé) construction at Château de Beaucastel; Charles Perrin (right) and architect Louis-Antoine Grégo; vintages in cellar; cellar barrels, view from new structure.

The Château de Beaucastel wine was stunning—their 1998 Hommage a Jacques Perrin deserving the first ‘100 point’ score I have ever given in 17 years of writing about wine. This Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine made from 13 different grape varieties is balanced, suave, silky and brilliant with an invigorating finish after a complex river of subtle flavors. Quite the yellow brick road journey.

Balanced, complete.

After a day of visiting, I enjoyed a dinner with co-owner Charles Perrin and his lovely wife as well as with Guillaume Jourdan, owner of VitaBella based in Paris and Lyon, with whom I have traveled several times.

Dinner was at L’Oustalet, a Michelin starred restaurant in the lovely village of Gigondas. I was too immersed in the moment to write down the names of dishes, but overall the meal was varied and fantastic.

Dishes.

Don’t ask. I was too mesmerized to list them.

Tastes as good as it looks

Thanks for tuning in!

I’ll be at En Primeurs tasting week in Bordeaux starting tomorrow, and soon to elsewhere in the coming month or two. Stay tuned and check out my Instagram accounts, whether VinoVoices or tjlmullen.
